Professional Background

Marvin Lieberman holds the Harry and Elsa Kunin Chair in Business and Society at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he serves as Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Doctoral Program and chair of the Strategy area. Prior to joining UCLA Anderson in 1990, he was Assistant Professor of Business Policy in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He received his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees (in Economics and Business Economics, respectively) from Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society and currently serves as the Society’s Media Innovations Co-Editor.

Research Interests

Professor Lieberman’s current research focuses on issues relating to (1) market entry and (2) firm-level productivity and performance comparisons. His broader teaching and research interests are in the areas of competitive strategy, industrial economics and operations management. He is the author of numerous articles in professional journals, on topics such as cost reduction and productivity improvement, market entry and exit, strategic investment, and value-based strategy. His paper on “First Mover Advantages” (co-authored with David Montgomery) was awarded the 1996 Best Paper Prize by the Strategic Management Society.
