Professional Background

Marvin Lieberman holds the Harry and Elsa Kunin Chair in Business and Society at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he heads the Strategy Area and serves as a Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Doctoral Program.  He received his undergraduate degree (Economics) and Ph.D (Business Economics) from Harvard University.  His current research focuses on business entry and exit, resource redeployment, and methods to assess the creation and distribution of economic value by business firms.  He has published on additional topics including learning curves, strategic deterrence, vertical integration, competitive imitation, first-mover advantages, and the comparative productivity of manufacturing firms.  He serves on several boards and is a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society.

Research Interests

Professor Lieberman’s current research focuses on issues relating to (1) market entry and (2) firm-level productivity and performance comparisons. His broader teaching and research interests are in the areas of competitive strategy, industrial economics and operations management. He is the author of numerous articles in professional journals, on topics such as cost reduction and productivity improvement, market entry and exit, strategic investment, and value-based strategy. His paper on “First Mover Advantages” (co-authored with David Montgomery) was awarded the 1996 Best Paper Prize by the Strategic Management Society.
